Micron on Tuesday announced its new 1α fabrication process for DRAM. Initially, the company will use it to make DDR4 as well as LPDDR4 memory, but over time it will be used to produce all types of the company’s DRAM.

Since the announcement of AMD’s Zen 3 core microarchitecture, we’ve been expecting three series of products to be announced: desktop Ryzen, mobile Ryzen, and enterprise EPYC.

The unannounced Ryzen 5 5600H mobile processor has appeared in what seems to be a Xiaomi Mi laptop. The multiple Geekbench 5 submissions offer a look into the performance that the hexa-core chip could provide.

An inadvertently-published Geekbench score indicates that Intel’s upcoming Ice Lake-SP processors may have more cores than Intel advertises today. At least one server vendor is already testing engineering samples of such chips that appear to come with 36 cores that run at a pretty decent frequency.

The Ryzen 7 5800U (via Leakbench) is the first Ryzen 5000 (Cezanne) mobile APU to appear in the wild. The Ryzen 5000 branding will cause a bit of chaos in the mobile space.

AMD filed a patent for hybrid processors featuring heterogeneous general-purpose cores as far back as 2017, but the company does not seem to have plans to bring such CPUs to the market before operating systems for PCs can use them properly.

In an update to analysts and investors, Intel has revealed some additional details about its ongoing projects, namely the Alder Laker hybrid processor for client PCs as well as the Sapphire Rapids CPUs for servers. Apparently, Alder Lake is sampling to PC makers, whereas Sapphire Rapids is about to.

DDR5 has been in the works for quite some time now. JEDEC published the preliminary spec sheet back in April, and in March Samsung announced its 2021 mass production plans. Now, SK hynix has come around to tell us that it is launching the first DDR5 modules — a world first.

Intel’s highly-anticipated launch of Tiger Lake processors puts the company in a rather comfortable position in the market of CPUs for thin-and-light laptops. But the semiconductor giant needs to offer something new for high-performance notebooks and compact desktops too, so it quietly added two new Comet Lake-H processors into its family.
